ABOUT
Ginger Matchett
Originally from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, I began painting in 2016, when I was a freshman in high school. In 2020, I moved to Washington, D.C. to complete a B.A. in International Relations at American University, where I continued to paint and take advanced studio classes in the art department. I currently reside and work in D.C, creating artwork and completing commissions in my spare time.

I started exploring the female figure in 2019 and have continued concentrating on figuration. Since moving to D.C., I have broadened my practices to focus on studying abstract expressionism. In 2023, I began combining these two subject matters and experimenting with the interconnectedness of figuration and abstraction. Through my work with acrylic and oil on polypropylene paper, I render the female figure with various abstract techniques, line work, different shapes, marks, and brushstrokes. I enjoy working large-scale, most recently painting my collection "Moving Myself," - 10 foot by 5 foot murals.

Femininity, the female presence in art, emotional evocation, and the meaning of gender and power dynamics are main themes of my pieces. I focus on an experimental process, creating a painting experience with personal discovery and self-expression.
